Lysefjord takes its name from rock, not water: lys means light in Norwegian, and the reference is to the pale granite walls that line forty-two kilometres of channel between Forsand and Lysebotn. The fjord is a drowned glacial trench, gouged by ice across successive glaciations and flooded when the sea returned.
Its floor lies 422 metres below the surface. Its walls stand close to a thousand metres above it. In long stretches, the water is deeper than the cliffs are tall.
